Ilia Gasviani holds a doctorate in philology. He graduated from the Faculty of Humanities at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, specializing in Romance philology, with a focus on French language and literature (his second compulsory language was Italian). He has been engaged in translation work since 2001. He has participated several times in translation residencies at the International House of Literature and Translation in Arles (France) and at the Translation House Looren (Switzerland). He has received scholarships from the French National Book Center, the Government of Italy, and the Canton of Valais (Switzerland). He currently teaches French literature at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. He translates from French and Italian. His translations include works by Claude Simon, Albert Camus, Dario Fo, Italo Svevo, and other authors.
