“What is Literature?” aimed to respond to the numerous criticisms concerning the principle of commitment voiced by writers Sartre respected. It was necessary to deeply reflect on the condition of the writer, to reexamine what the editor of Les Temps modernes meant by “literary engagement,” and to reaffirm its necessity. The structure of French society needed to be rethought, demands had to be formulated and publicly declared: who else could do this but those whose craft was writing — those who had the time to reflect and the means to argue? Reminding the writer of their civic responsibilities was not enough to convince them of this role. According to Sartre, the writer had to honestly question their own relationship to writing.
