The author of the book, Faisal Bey, is a Tunisian prince who was born in the Palace of Carthage during the reign of his great-grandfather. “I have many Georgian ancestors,” Faisal Bey writes in his autobiography, “beautiful odalisques (female attendants in the harem) who served at the Bey’s palace. I also have Georgian ancestors on my mother’s side. She belongs to a patrician family in Tunisia, founded by a Georgian Mamluk, Suleiman Kahia, who arrived in Tunisia in the late 17th or early 18th century. He joined the founder of our dynasty as a companion in arms, and he and his descendants subsequently rose to the highest ranks at the palace.” In his book The Last Odalisque, the author recounts the story of his own grandmother, a little girl brought from the mountains of the Caucasus, who first became an odalisque and later a member of the royal family.
