The novel “The Little Chartreuse” is built on the tension between speech and silence. It tells the story of a little girl who, like the monks of the Grande Chartreuse monastery who have taken a vow of silence, decides to stop speaking. Opposite her stands a bookstore owner, armed with great erudition, extraordinary memory, and a trove of quotes from great authors. The novel has won literary prizes such as the “Prix Inter” and the Rosine Perrier Prize. In 2005, it was adapted into a film.
